It is probably a sign of our times. People are so overwhelmed by the superficial, that they tend to ignore the essential. In an era of mass schooling, there are so many people who are plainly illiterate, uneducated and uncivilised.
This is the only way I have to explain how it is possible for the Acropolis of Athens, the symbol of the Western world with its principles and values as we know it, is to be left out of the "new" version of the 7 Wonders of the World, as it is apparently outvoted by some exotic landmarks.
